Create a class - Computer (2025)

You can create a class to assign work and post announcements to students.

If your school has a Google Workspace for Education account, you should use that email to create your classes. However, anyone over 13 years old can create a class using a personal Google Account.

Create a class

Create a class in Google Classroom (web)

  1. Go to classroom.google.comand click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example,you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.com.Learn more.

  2. At the top of the Classes page, click Add Create a class - Computer (1)Create a class - Computer (2)Create class.

    Note: If you don’t findCreate class, your account only lets you join classes. Switch accounts or contact your Google Workspace administrator for help.

  3. Enter the class name.
  4. (Optional) To enter a short description, grade level, or class time, click Section and enter the details.
  5. (Optional) To add a subject, click Subject and enter a nameor click one from the list that appears when you enter text.
  6. (Optional) To enter the location for the class, click Room and enter the details.
  7. Click Create.

Classroom automatically creates a class code that you can useto invite students to the class.You can always get the class code at the top of the class stream.

Accept a provisioned class

Your Google Workspace administrator can create classes for you and add students to them. To activate a provisioned class so it’s visible to students and co-teachers, you have to sign in to Classroom and accept the class.

  1. Go to classroom.google.comand click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example,you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.com.Learn more.

  2. On the class card, click Accept. ​​
  3. Confirm the number of students and activation of the class and click Accept.

Change the class theme

After you create a class, you can change the default image or color pattern that's displayed at the top of the class stream.

Important: Only a teacher can change the theme.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the class Create a class - Computer (3) Customize Create a class - Computer (4).
  3. To choose a theme image from the gallery:
    • Click Select photo Create a class - Computer (5)Create a class - Computer (6) photo Create a class - Computer (7) Select class theme.
    • Tip: To find more photos, click subject names above the gallery.
  4. To upload a theme image, click Upload photo Create a class - Computer (8) and choose an option:
    1. Drag a photo from your computer to the middle of the screen.
    2. Click Select a photo Create a class - Computer (9) your image Create a class - Computer (10) Open.
  5. To change the theme color, under Select theme color, click any color.
  6. Click Save.

Edit class information

  1. Go to classroom.google.comand click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example,you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.com.Learn more.

  2. On the class card, click More Create a class - Computer (11)Create a class - Computer (12)Edit.
  3. Enter a new name, section, subject, or roomCreate a class - Computer (13)click Save.

Change your profile photo

Classroom uses your Google Account profile photo as your Classroom profile photo. To change your photo, go toChange your Gmail profile picture.

Copy a class

To save time, you can copy a class for another section or term. For instructions, go to Copy a class.

Problem creating a class?

  • If you have a Google Workspace for Educationaccount but can't add a class, your Google Workspace administrator might need to verify that you’re a teacher. Contact your administrator for help. For instructions, administrators can go toVerify teachers and set permissions.
  • If you have a personal Google Account, there are limits on the number of classes that you can create. Learn more about Classroom limits.
